A Laguna Beach doctor claims that he is about a year away from perfecting a new laser technology that lets you permanently change your eye colour from brown to blue.
Dr. Greg Homer has been working on this technology for 10 years and says it is possible because brown-eyed people have blue eyes underneath a layer of brown pigment. The procedure, when perfected, will take about 20 seconds. A laser beam will absorb the brown pigment from the surface of the iris leaving eyes blue. The brown tissue will never regenerate. So once you go blue, you can never go back.
He estimates that the procedure will cost about $5,000.
“The eyes are the windows to the soul,” Homer told KTLA. “A blue eye is not opaque, you can see deeply into it, and a brown eye is very opaque. I think there is something very meaningful about this idea of having open windows to the soul.”
As someone who has brown eyes, I don’t think that my ‘soul’ is being represented incorrectly. Not only would I not undergo this procedure because depleting a layer of your iris seems very unsafe to me, but also because it contradicts my belief of embracing your naturally beauty.
However, I have no doubt about the fact that people will go ga-ga over this new fad. The booming coloured contact lens business has no shortage of teenage girls wanting to get lighter eyes. Especially in Asian cultures, girls are obsessed with looking “westernized”. Bollywood actresses often wear contact lenses that inspire other girls in India to do the same, while this blog explores the idea of Asian girls wanting to look foreign.
If girls already undergo procedures like changing their teeth, this laser surgery isn’t a very big step.
